A rallying icon of morale for a unit that operates in the most austere locations on the planet
The 109th Airlift Wing has a unique mission. Unlike other Air National Guard units who train for readiness, the 109th AW deploys twice a year at minimum: during the Boreal Summer, the unit operates in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland; during the Austral Summer, the unit operates out of McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Whether it is supporting the National Science Foundation or a military exercise, the maintenance squadron in particular is instrumental to mission success, forging through harsh working and living environments. As a result, the new squadron patch is designed to raise squadron morale by paying homage to all the maintenance shops and immortalizing a beloved mascot, the Raven.
